FAQ: Questions about mattress cushions made to measure

Mattress cushions made to measure | FAQ

What types of foam does LP Polster offer?

  • At LP Polster, we mainly use PUR foam and HR cold foam in various firmnesses. PUR foam can be used versatilely for seat, back and lounge cushions. HR cold foam offers high elasticity and is especially suited to high-quality seat cushions and mattresses.

What is the difference between PUR foam and HR cold foam?

  • PUR foam is a versatile, flexible upholstery foam for numerous applications. HR cold foam has a more open cell structure, is especially elastic and shape-stable, and offers high seating and lying comfort. That's why we particularly recommend HR foam for high-quality seat cushions and regularly used mattresses.

What foam is suitable for seat cushions?

  • For seat cushions, the foam should be sufficiently shape-stable and load-bearing. PUR 30/48, for example, is suitable as a medium-firm option for many classic seat cushions. If you want more comfort or a more durable version, you can opt for a suitable HR cold foam.

Which foam is suitable for back cushions?

  • Back cushions may generally be softer than seat cushions. Depending on the comfort desired, PUR 22/40 or PUR 30/48, for example, may be suitable. We can also finish back cushions with padding and jersey for a softer, more voluminous look.

Which foam is suitable for mattresses?

  • For regularly used mattresses, we especially recommend HR cold foam. At LP Polster, various firmnesses are available. As a general guide, HR 30/40 is suitable up to approx. 80 kg body weight, HR 40/40 up to approx. 120 kg, and HR 45/50 up to approx. 140 kg. Mattress height and personal lying feel should also be considered when choosing.

What do figures like 30/48 or 40/70 mean for foam?

  • In a designation like PUR 30/48, the numbers represent technical properties of the foam. Put simply, the first number describes the density (RG) and the second the compression hardness (SH). Both values are important for assessing the quality, firmness and suitable application of a foam.

Which foam is suitable for soft backrests and armrests?

  • For especially soft padding, we offer PUR 18/20, for example for armrests and decorative cushions. PUR 22/40 is also soft and is suitable, among other things, for comfortable backrests and softer cushions.

Which foam is suitable for garden and outdoor cushions?

  • For garden and outdoor cushions, we tend to recommend a suitable PUR foam. On our foam page, PUR is used, among other things, for outdoor cushions, seat pads and bench pads, while HR cold foam is more geared towards mattresses and high-quality indoor seating solutions.

Is a harder foam automatically better and more durable?

  • No. Harder doesn't automatically mean better. What matters is that density, compression hardness, cushion thickness and use fit together. A back cushion, for example, needs a different firmness than a heavily used seating surface. That's why the foam should always be chosen to match the specific project.

What foam quality is suitable for motorhome, camper and boat cushions?

  • For frequently used camper, caravan and boat cushions, a high-quality HR cold foam can be a good choice. Our HR 40/40, for example, is intended for caravan and boat cushions as well as comfortable seat cushions. Depending on the desired firmness and use, other qualities can also make sense.

How do I find the right foam for my cushion project?

  • The application, cushion height, desired firmness and load are decisive. For backrests, a soft foam can make sense, while seating surfaces need greater stability. For mattresses, body weight and desired lying comfort also play an important role. When you configure a complete cushion at LP Polster, foam, dimensions and other features can be chosen to match the project.

Are the covers removable?

  • On request, we make removable covers with a zip that can be easily cleaned.

Can zips be positioned individually?

  • Yes. The position of the zip can be taken into account for custom-made items. A sketch or a photo with the desired position is helpful for this.

Can cushions also be made from a template?

  • Yes. For complex special shapes, a precisely fitted template can be useful. On this basis, we can make the cushion according to the desired shape.

Can I receive fabric samples before ordering?

  • Yes. Fabric samples can be requested to help choose colour and material.

Which LP-Polster foam is suitable for what?

  • 3–5 cm Thin pads, seat cushions, light benches, panels. Rather firm / low comfort – serves mainly as a visual accent or light protection, little cushioning of its own.

  • 6–8 cm Dining chairs, simple benches, close-fitting pads. Good everyday comfort – provides solid support for upright sitting over medium periods.

  • 8–10 cm Benches, smaller sofas, reading corners, pallet furniture. High seating comfort – pleasant give combined with stability; ideal for regular, longer sitting.

  • 10–12 cm High-quality sofas, living-room upholstered furniture, generous seating corners. Very comfortable – optimal balance of support and cosiness for everyday living spaces.

  • 12–15 cm+ Deep lounge sofas, daybeds, high-quality back cushions. Especially soft and voluminous – maximum comfort factor, ideal for relaxing, lying down and sinking in deeply.

Important: cushion thickness alone doesn't determine comfort. What matters is the combination of cushion height, foam quality, firmness and desired seating feel. A thicker cushion is therefore not automatically softer.

LP-Polster recommendation: the choice shouldn't be limited to just soft, medium-firm and firm. The interplay of density, compression hardness, cushion thickness, body weight and application is especially important. This lets you choose the foam that matches the desired seating or lying comfort.
